Repairs underway to Chelsea water main
Workers in Chelsea hope to complete repairs on a broken water main by this afternoon, restoring water supply to some 200 customers who lost service when the pipe broke around 2 a.m. today.
Joe Foti, director of Chelsea’s public works department, said the 16-inch pipe likely gave way because of age – it was about 100 years old – and not due to the bitter cold. “I don’t think we’ve had enough cold days for the frost to reach,’’ he said. “The pipe is buried about five foot deep.’’
Foti said the break caused a rupture about four feet in size, and that city workers were able to shut down water flow “fairly quickly.’’ Still, he said, streets and sidewalks near the break site – Broadway and Beacon Street – were sanded due to icing conditions.
Foti said the repairs will require workers to replace 12 feet of pipe.
