A community college student pleaded not guilty today to charges that he groped a woman on an MBTA Red Line train earlier this month.

Brian Canning, 26, appeared in Boston Municipal Court to face one count of indecent assault and battery. He was released on personal recognizance and ordered to stay away from the victim, a 20-year-old Cambridge woman, and stay off the MBTA.

In an interview with MBTA Transit Police, Canning acknowledged that a surveillance camera captured him as he boarded a Red Line train. But he “denied any involvement in the indecent assault and battery,’’ according to a transit police report.

According to transit police, the Cambridge woman told police a male passenger fondled her buttocks while both were on a Red Line train traveling between the Charles Street and Park Street stations during the afternoon of Dec. 13.

Transit police scoured surveillance video and showed some to the woman, who identified a man in the image as her assailant. Transit police then tracked down the Charlie Card used by the man, a trail that allegedly led them to Canning.

Canning was taken into custody by transit police Wednesday at the Massachusetts Bay Community College.
