700 East Boston elementary school evacuated due to 'smoke conditions'
An elementary school in East Boston has been evacuated as Boston firefighters try to discover the source of smoke coming from the basement.
Boston fire spokesman Steve MacDonald said staffers at the Donald McKay school on Cottage Street were already leading their students out of the building when firefighters arrived on the scene shortly after noon today.
“There is smoke condition in the basement,’’ MacDonald said in a telephone interview. “We are trying to find out what’s causing the smoke condition.’’
He said there were no reports of injuries or that staff had encountered any problems evacuating the students.
School spokesman Matthew Wilder said about 700 K-8 students have been relocated to the nearby East Boston Early Education Center while firefighters are investigating the McKay. He said the students will remain at the center pending work by the firefighters.
