Just when you were saying, "Whew! I'm glad that bitterly cold weather is about to be over," Mother Nature has prepared another surprise.

Massachusetts is expected to see improving temperatures after another freezing cold night last night. But National Weather Service forecasters say there is a high probability of a "significant coastal storm" in southern New England waiting down the road -- late Wednesday through part of Thursday.

Forecasters issued a hazardous weather outlook, saying the storm could bring heavy snow, mixed precipitation, or both, along with gusty north to northeast winds.

The forecasters said the storm's track and intensity are still uncertain so they're not predicting yet exactly what the storm holds in store.

But forecasters said it appears likely there will be "significant snow accumulations" and possibly a period of freezing rain or sleet or both.

Temperatures dropped further this evening than meteorologists had expected earlier today. The temperature at Bedford was 5 below zero by 9 p.m., in Orange (where it dropped to 22 below on Sunday night) it was 7 below, and in Springfield, it was 8 below.

But on Tuesday, highs will reach the mid-20s in southern New Hampshire to nearly 40 on the Cape and islands, forecasters said.
