Attorney General Martha Coakley says she's going to crack down on public corruption and white collar crime.

Speaking at a Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce breakfast this morning, Coakley said she would expand her overburdened fraud and corruption division and separate it into two units, one to focus on public corruption and the other to focus on financial fraud.

She asked the assembled business leaders to assist her in the white collar cases, saying it’s in their interest to create a fair competitive market

She said it was vital for her to attack such crimes because district attorneys are having their budgets cut, and they have to focus on street crimes.

"We intend to make a strong statement not just with these divisions, but with what they’re going to do," she said.

Coakley, who recently won reelection to her second term, said her office has already prosecuted more than 40 corruption cases.

"It makes you wonder how much is out there that we haven’t been able to go after,” she said.
