A nor'easter swirling up the Atlantic coast could bring as much as 17 inches of snow to parts of southern New England beginning late Tuesday night -- and it will likely turn the Wednesday morning commute into a mess, the National Weather Service said today.

"The weather will not be conducive to a morning commute," said weather service meteorologist Alan Dunham. "Visibility will be terrible, snow blowing and drifting. It will be an absolutely ugly commute Wednesday morning."

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch, predicting 10 to 17 inches of snow and warning that the storm would wallop most of Massachusetts, sparing only the outer Cape and islands.

Snow is expected to fall at a rate of 1 to 2 inches an hour, with winds reaching 15 to 25 miles per hour in northern Massachusetts.

Forecasters said in a detailed discussion posted on their website that winds could gust up to 40 miles per hour along the immediate coast and, with low visibility, there was a chance for near-blizzard conditions.

"Expect a big hit for this storm" for about 18 to 24 hours, the discussion said.

A map showing projected snowfall amounts issued by the weather service showed 16 inches falling in some areaas of Southeastern Massachusetts. More than a foot was predicted in most of the state, except for areas on the outer Cape, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket. The map predicted 17 inches in some areas of Rhode Island and Connecticut.

Dunham said highs today will be in the low 30s and lows in the upper teens. Skies today will be mostly sunny, with clear skies expected for tonight.

On Tuesday, skies are expected to be mostly sunny, with highs in the low 30s. Clouds are expected to move in by the late afternoon, Dunham said.
