Gym shorts, T-shirts -- what a day! The warm weather encouraged some people to take a stroll in Boston's Public Garden.

This afternoon, a four-letter word of a different kind best describes the weather in greater Boston -- "nice."

According to the National Weather Service, the thermometer at Logan International Airport hit 59 degrees around 4 p.m. today. Similar numbers were recorded across the state, although some communities, like Nantucket, stayed in the 40s, the weather service said.

The mild conditions will continue through the night and last into Friday. High temperatures could once again near 60 degrees Friday, although the weather service
said temperatures will be in the 50s due to an expanded cloud cover.

Winter weather is heading back to the region Friday night. Colder temperatures are expected to dominate the weather pattern through most of next week, the weather service said.

“We go back to normal temperatures over the weekend. We are going to have some real gusty winds, so that will add a real bite,” said Charlie Foley, a meteorologist from the National Weather Service in Taunton. “People are going to get spoiled, and then even though we will be 40 degrees … people will say it is raw, cold out.”

There is a potential for a light rain across northern Massachusetts into southern New Hampshire in the next 48 hours.

“With every front there is always a possibility’’ for rain, Foley said. “There is a 30 percent chance, but most places won’t see it. It will be more sprinkles.”

A mix of snow and rain is predicted for Sunday night into Monday, the weather service said.
