STONINGTON, Conn. (AP) — A 9-year-old Stonington girl for whom Connecticut police had issued an Amber Alert has been found safe in Rhode Island, and a registered sex offender who is friends with the girl’s mother is in custody.

Lt. John Arnold of Richmond police in Rhode Island says Daisha Rhodes was found with Daniel Candales, of Lisbon, Monday evening outside a grocery store. She was reported missing hours earlier.

Arnold says Candales is being held without bail on a fugitive from justice charge. The Hartford Courant reports he is a registered sex offender.

Arnold says Candales evaded police from Connecticut and Rhode Island during a pursuit and was found parked at a Stop & Shop. He says the girl appeared unharmed.

Stonington Police say Candales, a friend of Rhodes’ mother, is expected to face other charges in Connecticut.end of story marker
