Inmate death after NE Pa. prison fight probed
HONESDALE, Pa. (AP) — Officials say an inmate at a federal prison in northeastern Pennsylvania died after a fight with another inmate.
Prison spokeswoman Kim Straesser says the fight broke out Friday morning in a housing unit at the federal penitentiary in Canaan Township, Wayne County.
She says staff responded and separated the inmates, but 29-year-old Ephiram Goitom was pronounced dead just before 11 a.m. at Wayne Memorial Hospital. The second inmate, whose name has not been released, was treated for minor injuries.
The Wayne County coroner has ordered a forensic autopsy and Straesser says the FBI is investigating the death.
The (Scranton) Times-Tribune (http://bit.ly/13mRwVm ) says Goitom was sentenced in July on drug and weapons counts stemming from a December 2010 shooting that wounded a Stamford, Conn., police officer.
