BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) — State police say two Bridgeport officers were forced to shoot a man during a foot chase when he threatened them with a knife.
Troopers say the officers shot 35-year-old Michael Stinson multiple times Thursday night on Atlantic Street after trying to subdue him with non-lethal methods including stun guns and pepper spray. Officials say Stinson is in critical condition at Bridgeport Hospital.
State police say they’re withholding the officers’ names pending notification of their families.
Authorities say a University of Bridgeport security guard saw Stinson trying to break into an unmarked city police vehicle at about 9 p.m. and called police. Police say Bridgeport officers arrived and chased Stinson into an apartment building, where he lunged at the officers with a knife and was shot.
State police are investigating the shooting.
