NEWBURGH, N.Y. (AP) — Police have identified the motorist killed in an accident that shut down westbound Interstate 84 in the Hudson Valley for about five hours.
Police in the Orange County town of Newburgh say 33-year-old Arben Smajlaj of Mahopac was driving west when his 2003 Dodge Neon either stopped or slowed and was hit from behind by a 2013 Ford Escape at about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday.
He was declared dead at the scene. The SUV driver was treated at a hospital for minor injuries.
Newburgh and state police continue to investigate the cause of the accident.
I-84 runs from Connecticut through southeastern New York to northeastern Pennsylvania. The accident happened near the exit 16 ramp to Route 17K about 60 miles north of New York City.
