New London buys back dozens of guns, 1 AK-47
NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) — A gun buyback in New London has netted 40 handguns, 38 long guns and an AK-47.
The Day of New London reports (http://bit.ly/WBfso3 ) that nine long guns that did not qualify for the buy-back program also were turned in on Saturday.
Police distributed $7,175 in gift cards to 47 individuals.
Jim Parsells of Uncasville got a .22-caliber Ruger more than 60 years ago when he was in the military that he said he’s used to shoot jackrabbits.
He turned in the gun and two other weapons for cash. Parsells says he’s skeptical that the program will get guns out of the hands of criminals.
Several Connecticut cities have offered money to encourage gun owners to sell their guns since the Sandy Hook killings on Dec. 14.
The buyback was set to continue on Sunday.
