South Florida women beat Rutgers 42-39

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Andrea Smith scored 17 points, including a free throw with 1:19 left to lift South Florida to a 42-39 win over Rutgers on Saturday in the second round of the Big East women’s basketball tournament.

The Bulls will face top-seed Notre Dame on Sunday in the quarterfinals.

South Florida (21-9) trailed the entire game until Smith hit the free throw. The Bulls had a few chances to extend the lead, but couldn’t convert.

Rutgers had one final chance, but Betnijah Laney turned the ball over at the top of the key with a few seconds left.

Inga Orekhova hit two free throws with 2.3 seconds left to seal the win.

Monique Oliver scored 15 points to lead Rutgers (15-14).end of story marker
