Man dies in Mansfield kayaking accident

MANSFIELD, Conn. --A 53-year-old Ellington man died Wednesday night after an apparent kayaking accident on the Fenton River, the state Department of Environmental Protection said.

Authorities were withholding the man's name late Wednesday pending notification of his family.

The man was pronounced dead at Windham Hospital. Two mountain bikers found an overturned kayak in the river just north of Route 89 and flagged down a passing motorist, who called 911 shortly before 6 p.m., the DEP said.

DEP conservation officers were investigating.
