Woman convicted in stabbing death of pregnant woman

NEW HAVEN, Conn. --A jury has convicted a woman who was accused of helping her boyfriend fatally strangle and stab a pregnant Meriden woman three years ago.

The New Haven Superior Court jury found 23-year-old Jennifer Helmedach guilty of felony murder. Jurors deliberated three days.

She was charged in the death of her friend, 20-year-old Faye Bennett, whose 6-month-old fetus also died.

Defense lawyer Richard Reeve said he expects Helmedach to file an appeal, but he did not comment further.

The case touched off the state's first Amber alert when Helmedach and her boyfriend, David Bell, fled with their 1-year-old daughter after the 2004 killing.

Prosecutors say Bell was wanted on arrest warrants in Hartford and Meriden, and planned to rob Bennett and steal her car for a getaway.

Bell is serving an 85-year sentence in Bennett's death.

Helmedach is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 14.
