WESTFIELD, Mass.—A former Pittsfield mayor and president of the University of Hawaii system has been named to lead Westfield State College.

Westfield State's trustees on Wednesday selected Evan Dobelle to become the school's 19th president.

Dobelle most recently was the president and CEO of the New England Board of Higher Education. Dobelle also previously served as president of Trinity College in Hartford, City College of San Francisco and Middlesex Community College.

In 2004, Dobelle resigned as president of the University of Hawaii after regents questioned the way he spent university money.

His name goes before the state Board of Higher Education on Friday for final approval.

Dobelle calls the selection an "honor."

Westfield State has about 5,000 students.
