STAMFORD, Conn.—A lawsuit filed against the city of Stamford by the mother of a 5-year-old severely burned at a city park has been settled for $500,000.
In August 2004, Sofia Silva got second-degree and third-degree burns when her dress caught fire on a spotlight in Jackie Robinson Park.
A driver saw the girl on fire and leaped out of the car to help. The woman, who said she saw a spark when Sofia ran near the light, helped the child's father and others roll the child on the ground to put out the flames.
The Stamford city attorney says the city agreed to pay $375,000. AFB Construction Management of Trumbull, the contractor in charge of park maintenance, agreed to pay $125,000.
