NEW HAVEN, Conn.—A Superior Court judge has dismissed a lawsuit filed by the family of a woman who hanged herself in the East Haven Police Department lockup in 2002.
The judge has ruled East Haven police could not have known that Sherrie Kastancuk of West Haven, who was arrested on a shoplifting charge, was in imminent danger of harming herself.
The estate of Kastancuk, who died Feb. 2, 2002, filed suit in 2005, charging that East Haven police violated Kastancuk's rights by failing to protect her from herself.
Kastancuk's sister says police should have known she might have medical issues because they knew she was a heroin addict stealing to feed her habit.
