NEW HAVEN, Conn.—State officials say that a company has waited nearly a month before telling Connecticut State University System officials that personal information on students is on a stolen laptop computer.

The laptop was stolen in New York on March 13 and state officials say it contains the names and personal information of 3,502 present and former students of the four CSU universities.

The state has sent letters warning students of Southern, Central, Eastern and Western Connecticut state universities to safeguard against potential identity theft.

The laptop belongs to an employee of SunGard Higher Education, of Malvern, Pa., the state university system's student data management software provider.
