HARTFORD, Conn.—A Hartford police officer has avoided jail time for lying to get approval for a search warrant that led to the arrests of two people in a 2004 drug investigation.

Superior Court Judge David Gold sentenced Nathaniel Ortiz to two years of probation and 220 hours of community service on Tuesday.

The search led to the arrests of Raynette Woodard and her friend, Lloyd McLaughlin, on marijuana and gun charges.

Prosecutors say Ortiz lied when he said a confidential informant gave him marijuana from drug buy to support allegations that drugs were being sold at Woodward's home. They also say he lied when he said he found a gun in Woodward's apartment, when another officer found the gun outside in a parked vehicle.

Ortiz, who has resigned from the department, did not comment publicly about his sentence.
