MADISON, Conn.—Madison officials have forced Police Chief Paul Jakubson to step down temporarily while investigators look into his management of an agency plagued by scandals.

Police commissioners placed Jakubson on paid leave Tuesday and appointed former Hamden Police Chief Robert Nolan as acting head of the department.

Jakubson's management has come under scrutiny in the past year. During that time, four officers have been fired for alleged crimes and in-house policy violations.

Two of those officers were forced out amid allegations they consorted with prostitutes, and others face similar allegations.

The decision to put Jakubson on leave followed a hearing on Officer Daniel Hedges, who also faces termination in the misconduct probe. The hearing was continued.

Messages were at left at Jakubson's office and home.
