SOUTHBURY, Conn.—State police have arrested a 22-year-old Sharon man charged with crashing his car in Southbury and breaking into a nearby home.

Police say Justin Alter was shot and wounded by the homeowner.

He has been charged with criminal trespass in the incident that occurred in November. He surrendered to police on Friday.

Police say Alter's car crashed through a guardrail down an embankment early in the morning Nov. 4. Police say he became disoriented and made his way to John Nagy's house nearly a half-mile away.

Nagy told police he encountered a man in the darkness who ran toward him. Nagy fired one shot before running outside to call police.

Police found Alter in the basement and he was taken to a hospital where he underwent surgery for a gunshot wound.
