Deportation likely for dog death case

BRISTOL, Conn.—A man who allegedly drilled several holes in a dog's head plans to accept deportation rather than stand trial on animal cruelty charges.

Severino Cruz says he attacked the pit bull at his home in Plainville with a drill in January after the dog bit his 8-year-old son. The dog had to be euthanized because of its injuries.

The 32-year-old Cruz has pleaded not guilty to charges of cruelty to animals, as well as maliciously maiming or killing an animal.

A judge on Wednesday denied Cruz application for accelerated rehabilitation, a special form of probation. Cruz's attorney, Deron Freeman, says his client probably will be deported to Mexico in the next two weeks or so.
