NORWICH, Conn.—A 47-year-old Norwich man has been charged with stealing from the donation center set up for the people left homeless by a massive apartment complex fire.

Police say Americo Alves was caught stealing from the Peachtree Apartments donation center on Sunday.

Police say Alves went to the donation center and tried to pass himself off as one of the more than 160 people left homeless by the April 26 fire.

An employee of the apartment complex was present and said Alves was not a tenant of Peachtree Apartments.

Police say Alves left with several items but did not get far. He was arrested and is being held on $500 bond.
