NORWALK, Conn.—Two Norwalk city police officers were treated Tuesday for exposure to an insecticide while responding to a report of a 46-year-old man who drank the poison.

The two officers apparently got sick after inhaling the fumes. The man was in serious condition at Norwalk hospital.

Police said Officer Russell Ouellette was treated and released. Sgt. Marc Lepore was listed in satisfactory condition at Norwalk Hospital and was expected to be released Tuesday night.

The emergency room was shut down for a few hours because of the hazardous material.

Fire officials say the insecticide contained the toxic substance malathion and the incident touched off a hazardous material response from the state and local environmental officials.

The incident was reported at a home on Crown Avenue.
