NEW HAVEN, Conn.—New Haven police have charged a city man with kidnapping and burglary after they say he broke into the home of his son's mother, assaulted her and took the boy.

Police issued an Amber alert Wednesday morning while they looked for 5-year-old Isiah Williams and believed he was in danger. But the alert was canceled after the boy was found safe on Chapel Street just before 7 a.m. He's at a hospital for evaluation.

Authorities say they arrested 22-year-old Domingo Acosta when he walked into the police department a short time after the boy was found. They say he does not have legal custody of the boy.

Police say Acosta broke the boy's mother's nose when he punched her in the face Tuesday night. They say Acosta and the woman have had ongoing disputes.
