BRIDGEPORT, Conn.—Federal prison officials confirm that former Bridgeport state senator Ernest Newton has been moved to a Pennsylvania prison.

Newton had been serving his five year sentence for political corruption at Fort Dix in New Jersey, the same prison where former Bridgeport Mayor Joseph Ganim is serving a nine year sentence.

A spokesman for the federal prison system says there could be many reasons for an inmate's transfer, but would not say what specifically led to Newton's move to Lewisburg.

Newton was sentenced nearly a year ago for accepting a $5,000 bribe, using campaign contributions for personal expenses and failing to report the improper income on his federal tax return.
