SNELLING, S.C.—The low-level nuclear waste disposal site in Barnwell County is to close to most out-of-state shipments.

Starting Tuesday, the facility near Snelling will take waste only from South Carolina, New Jersey and Connecticut.

The Barnwell County site has taken waste from around the country for almost 40 years.

The agreement to limit shipments was reached in 2000. Barnwell County leaders have fought the agreement, worried about the loss of jobs and revenue.

County Council Chairman Keith Sloan told The State newspaper of Columbia the waste can be handled safely.

Environmentalists say the agreement will end the state's reputation as the nation's nuclear dumping ground. the amount of waste shipped to the site has been reduced in recent years.

The site is owned by Utah-based Energy Solutions.
