NEW MILFORD, Conn.—Fire officials say a 52-year-old man has died in a fire that gutted his condominium unit in New Milford.

A fire captain says neighbors were shouting that a man was trapped in the burning unit at Aspetuck Village when firefighters rolled up to the scene Sunday.

Firefighters searched the smoke-filled, second-floor unit for several minutes before locating the victim, who was taken by ambulance to New Milford Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities are withholding the man's name.

Investigators from the state and local fire marshals offices were called to the scene and are trying to determine what started the fire.
