NEW HAVEN, Conn.—New Haven police say a 15-year-old boy has died after his dirt bike struck a van in an accident that sparked an angry mob to attack the van's driver.

Police say Quinell Payne was riding the motorcycle on Shepard Street, went through a stop sign and smashed into the side of the van in the city's Newhallville section.

Authorities say that just minutes after the accident, a group of youths beat up the van driver. Investigators say it doesn't appear that the driver was at fault. His name has not been released.

Police Chief James Lewis says the van driver was "beat up pretty good" and taken to a hospital.
