Ansonia company cited for alleged safety hazards

WATERBURY, Conn.—An Ansonia company faces more than $200,000 in fines for alleged serious and repeat violations of workplace safety and health standards at its Waterbury tube mill.

The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration cited Ansonia Copper and Brass for 70 alleged violations.

OSHA officials say the citations are for deficient or damaged lifting hoists and slings, damaged or defective crane components, obstructed exit routes, untrained operators of industrial trucks, unsecured gas cylinders and electrical hazards.

The company has 15 days to decide whether to contest the allegations. It said Tuesday that many of the alleged violations were immediately corrected, and the safety record at the Waterbury mill is better than the industry average.
