SIMSBURY, Conn.—Connecticut authorities say a former Simsbury High School student has been arraigned on sexual assault charges after fleeing two years ago to his father's home in the Caribbean.

Nineteen-year-old Marc Ayala appeared in Enfield Superior Court on Tuesday. He is being held on a $160,000 bond and is set to return to court on Sept. 23.

Simsbury police say Ayala sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl he knew in 2006, when he was a 17-year-old high school senior, and then moved to St. Croix.

Authorities say they caught Ayala on Aug. 19 as he tried to board a flight from St. Croix to Florida. Police say homeland security officials checked his name and found he was wanted in Connecticut.

Ayala's lawyer calls the alleged incident a "consensual underage situation."
