Conn. judge considers suicide note in baby beating
NEW LONDON, Conn. --A Connecticut man is hoping a judge will spring him from jail in a baby beating case, based on his wife's suicide confession.
Twenty-six-year-old Christopher Santiago is charged with assault and risk of injury to a minor. The New London man was arrested in March and his wife died a week later from a painkiller overdose.
Just before Charley French-Cochise killed herself, she wrote a suicide note, saying she's the one who abused her baby.
Police say Santiago took his injured 3-month-old son to a hospital in August 2008. The baby had a fractured skull, 11 fractured ribs and a broken left leg. He is currently in foster care.
Santiago is due in New London Superior Court on Monday to ask the judge to throw out the charges against him. ![]()
