NORTH HAVEN, Conn.—North Haven police have arrested a local man in connection with the death of his 4-month-old niece, who authorities say suffered multiple blunt force trauma while in his care.
Thirty-three-year-old David Canizares was charged Tuesday night with risk of injury to a minor and reckless endangerment. He was held on a $250,000 bond and is to be arraigned in Meriden Superior Court Wednesday morning.
Police say Canizares was baby-sitting Makayla Aseltine, who lived in Middletown, and his 14-month-old daughter Sunday night. Authorities say he called 911 at about 9 p.m., saying the baby needed medical attention.
The girl died Monday night at Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital. The medical examiner ruled her death a homicide.
It's not clear if Canizares has a lawyer.
