NEW HAVEN, Conn.—New Haven officials and city activists are calling on state lawmakers to allow traffic surveillance cameras in cities and towns, so police can track down speeders and red-light runners.
The request is part of a resolution approved Thursday by a Board of Aldermen committee. State law doesn't allow the use of cameras to enforce red-light laws, but the General Assembly may take up the issue in next year's session.
New Haven officials and residents want cameras installed at dangerous intersections throughout the city to record the license plates of vehicles that run red lights. Violators would be fined up to $100.
People told the Board of Aldermen committee about the dangers they faced while walking or biking in the city. Aldermen must approve the resolution.
