STRATFORD, Conn.—Officials say a New Haven woman is in critical condition after being struck by a commuter train in Stratford.

A spokesman for Metro-North Railroad said 31-year-old Latoya Roberts and 34-year-old Napoleon Jenkins of Bridgeport apparently were trying to cross the tracks shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday as the train with about 150 passengers aboard was approaching.

Spokesman Dan Brucker said Jenkins managed to climb onto the platform and was trying to pull Roberts onto the platform when she was hit by the train. She was taken to Bridgeport Hospital.

Brucker said the engineer sounded the horn and applied the emergency brakes, but the train could not stop in time.

None of the passengers was hurt.

Brucker said Jenkins was charged with criminal trespassing.
