BRIDGEPORT, Conn.—The National Weather Service has confirmed that a tornado touched down in Connecticut's largest city during powerful storms on Thursday.

The tornado left a swath of destruction in Bridgeport, including collapsed buildings, blown-off roofs, shattered windows and fallen trees and power lines.

Authorities say more than 30 people were treated at city hospitals for storm-related injuries, but nearly all the injuries were minor.

Officials with the Weather Service surveyed the damage Friday. They say the tornado touched down on Main, Nichols and Cedar streets about a block north of Interstate 95 and packed 100 mph winds. They say it was about 100 yards wide and traveled less than a quarter mile.
