STORRS, Conn.—University of Connecticut officials say construction has started on a $53 million academic building in the midst of campus.

The East Building is being built next to Babbidge Library and is scheduled to be completed by August 2012. It will replace the aging Monteith and Arjona buildings.

The university's departments of political science, linguistics, modern and classical languages, economics, and journalism will move to East Building when it opens.

Those departments are now scattered throughout Arjona and Monteith.

A smaller structure known as West Building is also under construction. Ground was broken in December 2009, and it is scheduled for completion in May 2011.
