STONINGTON, Conn.—Some parents and students in Stonington are concerned that the Board of Education's proposed drug and alcohol policy is too intrusive.
The policy would make students subject to suspensions in sports and other activities if they are caught with drugs or alcohol at any time of the year, on or off school grounds.
Parent Ana Hoops said at a board meeting this week that while she respects the intent, she thinks the policy goes too far. She says it sounds like the board is trying to tell parents how to raise their kids.
Other parents wondered what would happen if their child was seen at an event where adults were drinking or drank wine for religious reasons.
The Sun of Westerly reports that other parents supported the measure, which board members say has passed legal review.
