NEW HAVEN, Conn.—Three firefighters have been hospitalized rescuing a woman who scaled a cliff at a New Haven Park.

Fire officials say a female hiker became trapped on a ledge on the face of a mountain at East Rock Park Thursday. A male companion was able to get down.

The New Haven Register reports ( http://bit.ly/nsQ8VM) that Fire Chief Michael Grant said he hopes the unidentified hiker, who was brought down safely, will be charged with violating local law banning climbing at East Rock.

A fire lieutenant trying to reach the hiker slid 60 feet down the rocky incline. Firefighters say he had a broken ankle. Another firefighter who was hit by falling rock and another who was suspended on a rope line for nearly an hour also were hospitalized.
