WILLIMANTIC, Conn.—Scores of people are participating in a fitness challenge at Eastern Connecticut State University to honor a Navy SEAL who was granted the Congressional Medal of Honor after he was killed in action in Afghanistan.

The third annual Veterans' Day Challenge on Nov. 11 consists of the workout of Navy Lt. Michael Murphy.

The 29-year-old from Patchogue, N.Y., was killed in 2005 while calling for reinforcements after Taliban insurgents ambushed his reconnaissance unit.

His workout involves a demanding one-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 air squats and another one-mile run. Some participants at ECSU's competition will wear 10-or 20-pound weight vests to increase the challenge.

The competition's proceeds support scholarships for military members, veterans and dependent students who attend ECSU.
