WEST HARTFORD, Conn.—Authorities in West Hartford say a house fire in a neighborhood with no power has killed an elderly woman, but her husband managed to escape without serious injury.

Officials are looking into the possibility that Tuesday night's fire on High Wood Road was caused by the couple's attempt to heat their home. Authorities say the couple were in their 80s.

Firefighters had trouble getting to the fire because downed trees from last weekend's storm blocked the road, and they had to run hoses under a tree that fell between the house and a hydrant.

The husband was taken to a hospital and didn't appear to be seriously injured from the blaze.

Authorities say the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
