STORRS, Conn.—University of Connecticut President Susan Herbst says the school could have a new leader for the UConn Health Center by January.

Herbst said Friday they have about 10 candidates to interview and "others who are still possibilities" to become vice president for health affairs and dean of the UConn medical school in Farmington.

Former UConn President Philip Austin has filled the role on an interim basis since Cato Laurencin (Lah-REN'-sin) stepped down earlier this year to return to research and surgery.

Herbst says interviews are also progressing well for UConn's next police chief, who could be selected next month.

Searches are also under way for new deans for UConn's business and fine arts schools, but those selections are likely to take place after the other two spots are filled.
