NEW BRITAIN, Conn.—Congressman Chris Murphy is pushing for a federal law with harsh penalties for transporting stolen veterans memorials across state lines, after several thefts in Connecticut.

The 5th District Democrat is scheduled to unveil details of the proposed Protect Veterans' Memorials Act on Friday morning at the site of one such theft -- the World War II Veterans Memorial at Kulper Park in New Britain. Thieves stole two World War II memorial plaques at the park last year.

Murphy says he's sickened that memorials, monuments and plaques honoring veterans are being stolen for scrap metal.

The federal law would complement state larceny laws.
