EAST HAVEN, Conn.—An immigrant advocates' group is demanding that East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo Jr. resign over comments he made after four town police officers were charged with violating the rights of Latinos.

The New Haven Register reports that ( http://bit.ly/AEQ7as) a dozen or so members of Community of Immigrants of East Haven went to Maturo's office on Thursday to deliver a list of demands including that he resign. Maturo's staff accepted the letter because the mayor is taking some time off.

Maturo drew heavy criticism and national media attention when he said in January that he might "eat tacos" when asked what he would do for the local Latino community after the FBI arrested the four officers, who are accused of routinely harassing and abusing Latinos.

Maturo has apologized for the comment.
