HARTFORD, Conn.—Two congressmen from Connecticut and Rhode Island have announced that the region's coveted production of two submarines a year has won its first test in Congress.

Connecticut Rep. Joe Courtney and Rhode Island Rep. Jim Langevin (LAN'-juh-vinn) said Wednesday that a congressional subcommittee has agreed to fund the two Virginia class submarines in 2014 and spend $787 million.

The measure also approves a five-year block of up to 10 new submarines, and authorizes incremental funding that assures vendors of a steady stream of money.

Courtney and Langevin, both Democrats, represent districts that are home to shipyards of Electric Boat, the General Dynamics Corp. subsidiary that manufactures the subs.

Courtney said the House is expected to approve the defense measure by Memorial Day, but that the Senate could take longer.
