WETHERSFIELD, Conn.—A Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority official is being tapped as Connecticut's new deputy commissioner of the state Department of Transportation.

Anna M. Barry will fill the role of chief operating officer and work with DOT Commissioner James Redeker (REHD'-eh-kur) to carry out the agency's strategy and goals. She is expected to start her new job in mid-September.

Barry is currently the MBTA's senior director of vehicle engineering and quality assurance in Boston. She oversees the technical development of MBTA's multibillion-dollar, multi-modal vehicle procurement program.

She has worked 24 years with the MBTA, employed in several management positions, including director of subway operations, managing the nation's oldest subway system. Barry has also served as director of railroad operations, overseeing the commuter rail contract.
