The push for a new park amid the hulking skyscrapers in Houston faced a fundamental challenge: residents here don’t actually like going outside, as demonstrated by a vast web of underground walkways that keep people indoors.

But since Discovery Green Park opened last spring, people have flocked to the 12-acre park, especially on weekends when downtown streets otherwise feel empty enough for tumbleweeds.
The push for a new downtown park among the hulking skyscrapers in Houston faced a fundamental challenge: Texans in this muggy metropolis shun the outdoors.
