Balch has come up with a cost-effective way to study coastal oceans: hitching rides on boats. He drives a wheeled laboratory onto the high-speed catamaran that travels from Portland, Maine, to Nova Scotia. Balch is trying to understand how climate change is impacting the Gulf of Maine.
