The researchers motored out to see them in the misty dawn on a boat equipped with 10 computers. When they spotted the telltale sprays of two whales a quarter of a mile away, teams of scientists lept into smaller rubber crafts and zoomed off after them. They circled the whales carefully, waiting for the right moment.
